Last week I hosted a webinar about youth ministry.
Let’s talk about that…
Okay. So I hosted a webinar called “Building Better Youth Ministries”
If you missed it you can still catch it here:
(Unless you are really far into the future, then sorry, check YouTube for the reply)
First off why did I do a webinar?
- I felt I had some knowledge I wanted to share that would help out the youth ministry community.
- I was trying to validate a course Idea by getting pre sales to it.
So how did it go?
The webinar itself went very well. No technical difficulties, I didn’t mess anything up, and I received a lot of positive feedback from the attendees.
Here is what my actual attendance numbers looked like.
Now, right off the bat we can see that the attendance was way lower than those who registered.
A few reasons for this.
First off you will always have less people show up than register, so that part I was expecting.
The other contributing factor was the time. I set two times booth based off what was good for me, rather than what would have been good for the youth pastors I wanted to show up.
I had a large number of youth pastors tell me they would not be able to make it but would sign up for the reply.
Okay lesson learned. The new dates are much more convenient and scheduled on the weekend so as to not interfere with ministry times, or jobs.
The other thing I did was test two ideas I had for creating a course.
The first night of the webinar I pitched a 5 week course on student ministry growth hacking.
Each week would feature a different growth tactic.
I had some interest but no one actually pre ordered.
The second webinar I pitched a course with the same name as the webinar.
“Building Better Youth Ministries” It is the same content as the webinar, just much more in depth and will have worksheets to walk the student through doing each step, and homework assignments to make sure they are taking action and implementing what they are learning.
Again, no takers.
So both courses got positive feedback but no pre sales to help me determine which one to move forward with.
And there was the problem of explaining why no one signed up and if it was worth the time to move forward with either.
There are a few things that could have kept people from signing up.
Based off the amount of registrants, and the feedback I received I don’t think It was the targeting, or people’s confidence.
I think it was primarily the price point. That added to the fact people were not going to actually get something for the money until the course launched on September 24th.
So if I was operating 100% the way smart entrepreneurs validate courses and products I would cut my losses and move on the the next idea.
Luckily I am not a smart entrepreneur… Wait, that came out wrong.
What I meant to say is as children of God we can and should rely on the Holy Spirit for guidance. Not just the data.
So after a lot of prayer I have made two major decisions in regards to the course.
- I am going to move forward with the “Building Better Youth Ministries” course.
- I want to make this training as accessible to as many youth pastors as possible, yet need to cover the costs of running Youth Factor, (And Hopefully make a little off the effort) so I am setting the course up as a donation instead of flat payment.
Overall just jumping out and taking action on the idea before I was really ready has been a great experience. School has now started and my time is limited.
If I had waited until I had everything figured out I would have gotten busy with school and youth and probably wouldn’t have gotten around to doing anything.
By taking imperfect action I have narrowed the two ideas down to 1, got feedback from a half dozen youth pastors that is helping me direct the content of the course, and when the course is ready to launch I have a list of 87 people who have risen their hand to say they are interested.
So whether you are looking to start your own course, want to start a blog, start an outreach, or just launch new curriculum, don’t wait until it’s perfect. You will never get there.
Like so many before you, just step out in faith and course correct along the way.
Well that about wraps it up for this week. If you have any questions that I didn’t address feel free to leave them in the comments and I will answer them.
Also You can sign up for the webinar here, and if you want to get beta access to the “Building Better Youth Ministries” Course sign up here.
