Hey hey, Jared here back with an episode, a long overdo episode of Youth Factor T.V. Today I want to talk to you guys about this Pokemon go thing.
Alright so it wasn’t that long ago where I talked about Pokemon go. And boy was I right. This thing in 5 days has exploded and taken off.
It’s getting kids off the couch to hike and ride their bikes up and down the street to hatch there Pokemon eggs. We have small business being flooded with new business.
I read a story about a pizza shop owner who has people coming in to catch the rare Pokemon in his shop, that are buying slices of pizza and drinks while they are catching Pokemon in his place.
This thing is hot right now. I am predicting that this is a foreshadowing of the next wave of social media. All that to say Pokemon Go is a big deal and is here to stay.
As a youth or college pastor your demographic is easier to talk to than ever before.
Here are 3 ways to capitalize on this and grow your youth ministry.
1. Go to local events
Kids playing Pokemon Go are gathering together to meet new players. Find out where these events are in your town and go. Be friendly and meet new people. It’s a great opportunity to put yourself in front of a new audience and start building bridges.
2. Host your own events.
Choose a Saturday to invite the local players to your church, or even better, if you are lucky enough to be a Poke-spot you can purchase what is called a lure module. This will attract better Pokemon to your area. Let everyone know that on the day of your service you will be dropping a lure module before and after your service.
These modules last 30 mins and only cost $1.19. It’s a great way to attract kids who are into the game.
3. Keep track of who is catching cool Pokemon with a leaderboard.
Have students post pictures of the rare Pokemon they catch at your church and tag your youth ministry.
There is no better advertisement right now than a kid catching a rare Pokemon at your service.
Pokemon Go has provided a great opportunity to meet and connect with new students. In the past we have had to spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars to host huge events with go carts, free food, and all other kinds of gimmicks.
Now you have a chance to have the same if not far greater reach just dropped in your lap for free.
-If you have a budget offer free pizza before your events. Food and the promise of rare Pokemon will be a lethal combo for attracting new students.
-And don’t forget to create a group for your local area. I set up “Pokemon Go RVA” a few days in. This way I have a place to connect with all the players, and gives me the opportunity to drop announcements about up coming events in.
All the above will get you in front of more students, and get more students coming to your services. However for a youth pastor with the call of God on his life to reach the lost, that simple is not enough.
We must then bridge the gab from enthusiasm for Pokemon, to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
Otherwise we are just collecting crowds of kids for vanity sake.
If you need to up your evangelism skills, and get better at talking to new students check out a series of resources I have coming around this topic.
